SHMI County Show
After a successful event last year, the South Hams Marine Industries
has decided to have a second go at the Devon County Show.
~
Chaired by Chris Harvey of Baltic Wharf Boatyard, the organisation
has more than 50 members from across the area encompassing among
others boatyards, riggers, sail makers, sailing and powerboat schools
and chandlers.
The show will be used as an opportunity for the members to work together
to promote the marine industry and share their knowledge.
It’s especially hoped youngsters will get involved and to that
end there will be an interactive demonstration as well as static
displays, pictures and an audio visual display.
Chris said: “We’re keen to get young people into the
marine industry to maintain its core. There will be a ‘blow-a-boat’ competition
which we hope youngsters will want to take part in. It will provide
a fun element to the stand.
”
The youngsters will first have to make a boat out of kits provided
and then see how far and fast they can blow them in a knock-out competition.
”
We’ll also have examples of types of rigging and sails and
a boat from Reddish Marine on the stand.
”
We hope it will be a fun attraction for everyone to visit.”
The SHMI was formed in 1994 to promote and develop the South Hams
as a centre of marine excellence, and also create a higher profile
image for those involved in the industry. Support is also given to
members through shared and mutually beneficial group activities.
Taking part in the show is just one way of doing this.
Chris said: “The show was very successful last year. It’s not the
sort of show where we can go and sell marine items, but we want to express the
marine industry in its widest context.
”
Local people would not otherwise have an awareness of the marine industry. It’s
also an opportunity for people to get more information on various activities.
“
We’re there to promote all the members.”
The SHMI will be exhibiting on stand 341 in Road 7.
After the Devon County Show, the SHMI has a full programme of other shows lined
up where members will be exhibiting throughout the summer including the Yealmpton
Show, Totnes Show, Kingsbridge Show and Southampton Boat Show.
Members will also have a presence at the Transat in Plymouth at the end of this
month and at Roadford Reservoir for the Schools Marine Challenge in June.
